With all clients my concern is that you have a safe place to work on your issues and move ahead with your life. If you are seeking counseling or therapy, that generally means that you have come to a point of needing to try something different to resolve personal difficulties. I can offer my experience in assisting you with your own process of discovery, emotional deepening, and defining of potential solutions.

With individual clients, I encourage you to explore your personal patterns and situations, with the aim of better understanding these patterns. I provide you an opportunity to learn to become more compassionate with yourself and others in your life, to communicate your needs and desires more effectively, to grow as an individual, and to achieve your personal goals. I have helped clients face, challenge and heal from experiences that seem overwhelming, intrusive and constricting their current life potential.

My practice also involves working with couples on relationship issues. I draw upon several sources for my work with couples, based upon trainings at The Couples Institute, with Dan Wile, and at The Gottman Institute. The Gottman Institute model begins with an assessment of the strengths and deficits in the couple relationship, providing a strategic perspective on the work we do. This then helps in defining the methods we use to strengthen your relationship and work through the problems that brought you to counseling. The Couples Institute model emphasizes specific developmental challenges that relationships face, and enabling communication skills that can lead to partners feeling understood, valued, loved and better able to work as a team.

I have had a private psychotherapy practice since 1983 working with individuals, groups, and couples. I did my undergraduate work at Harvard, and my Masters and PhD in Clinical Psychology at UC Berkeley (where my dissertation explored experiences of those growing up with an LGB parent). In addition, I have worked for 20 years at UCSF in HIV prevention, and published a variety of professional articles and book chapters. I have also been elected a Fellow in Division 44 of the American Psychological Association (Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity).
